There is no citation for his MC, but it was awarded whilst serving with 2nd South Staffordshire Regiment and appeared in the London Gazette on 18 Feb 1915.  The same issue of the London Gazette contains the award of the Victoria Cross to AFG Kilby, South Staffordshire Regiment.

Second Lieutenant Alexander John Ellis
Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a heavy enemy attack he was sent forward to endeavour to restore communication with Infantry Brigades in the front line. Under most difficult conditions he located the Brigades, and during the withdrawal which followed maintained continuous communication between the Brigades and Divisional Headquarters. He finally established a Forward Divisional Report Centre which proved to be of great value. He rendered valuable service, and showed great coolness and courage.

The next day when the maintenance of the line became impossible, he manned a visual station in a very exposed position thus enabling artillery fire to be brought to bear at a critical time."

LG 26 July 1917 This Distinguished Conduct Medal was probably a belated award for action with the 1st Field Company East Lancashire Royal Engineers at The Vineyard in Gallipoli around 7th-8th August 1915. This may be connected with the action in which Captain WT Forshaw of 1st/9th Battalion, The Manchester Regiment won the first Victoria Cross of the 42nd Division.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the period 25 Feb to 17 Sept 1918 especially during operations in March and April at Bucquoy and Essarts. When the officer in charge of the forward lines was wounded on 25 March 1918 he volunteered and went forward in charge of a cable detachment and restored broken communications under heavy shell fire. At a later date he extricated a portion of the company transport which was in a critical and dangerous position and thereby saved a considerable amount of valuable stores from falling into the hands of the enemy."

He was serving in No.2 (125th Brigade) Section on 10 January 1918 when the signal office was hit by artillery fire and Corporal Cox killed. Sergeant Watters dashed into the Signal Office and carried out the wounded under heavy shell fire.

He was wounded by shrapnel 17 June 1918 resulting in the amputation of his right arm.

Awarded an ‘Immediate’ MSM for the following action: "For courage and endurance in carrying out his duties as Despatch Rider. Whilst carrying despatches he fractured his ankle and, though in considerable pain repaired his bicycle without assistance and proceeded on duty and returned with fresh ones for the Division. In all he went 34 kilometres and did four hours duty after the accident, afterwards being admitted to hospital."

42 Signal Squadron is still recruiting spare-time soldiers to train on Tuesday evenings,  weekends, plus a 2-week exercise each year, often abroad. 
Applicants should be medically and physically fit, and aged 17 - 32 (can be older with previous military experience).
